Childrens' Book Publishing

Aspiring writers,
I see you!
I can see you there!
I know you're there, aspiring writers like myself!

I know at least six people, in between age nine and seventeen, look at this blog and are writing stories, like me. I decided to do a post from my experience, about what publishing actually is. Pretty much ever since I started my first long story, Greenwoods School, I have been looking up publishers. Here are a few things I found out:

  • Optimism is useful, but nevertheless don't get your hopes high.
  • It is definitely not impossible for children to get their work published.
  • Despite my last sentence, it is very difficult for even an adult to get their work published.
  • Look at the beginning of books with a similar subject to your own. Who published them? It should say. Look those publishers up.
  • Self-publishing is an option, although it costs.
Now, I'll explain further. Most publishers do not take "unsolicited" manuscripts. Thus, if you want to get your book published by a big publisher like Puffin or HarperCollins, you'll have to find an agent who will recommend you to them. You can start off by self-publishing, which basically means being your own publisher. The pluses of self-publishing are:

  • You can decide how everything looks yourself.
  • You don't have to deal with a fussy publisher.
  • You can do it whenever you like. You don't have to wait ages for a publisher.
The minuses of self-publishing are:

  • You don't have the help of a publisher to market it or make it known.
  • You have to pay for all the printing and everything yourself, which can cost a lot of money.
  • You have to know how to do it all. You don't have a publisher to help you.
I hope this made sense. And remember:

NEVER GIVE UP! :D :D :D :D

    1. Really? O.O
I'm surprised Twilight got published at all; I think it's awful.
But it's amazing such famous books were rejected so many times. ^.^
